Your C02 Emissions Savings Pledge

Congratulations on your pledge to reduce C02 emissions and help stop global warming.

1. Select any number of the following actions that you feel you can commit to by clicking in the boxes to the left.
2. Click the Submit button after you've made your choices, and you'll get an automatic total of the C02 emissions you've pledged to save. Your submission also allows us to keep a tally of all pledges.

NOTE: You can click on actions you may have already taken since 2002 and they will count in your total (Canada's Climate Change Plan aims for new emission reductions starting in 2002)

Home Appliances/Gadgets/Equipment

	Unplug/dispose of old fridge in basement.
	Run your dishwasher only with a full load. Use the energy-saving setting to dry dishes.
	Line dry clothes in summer.
	Line dry clothes all year (using indoor clothes drying rack adds benefit of additional humidity in the winter.)
	Replace old refrigerator (at least 10-years-old) with ENERGY STAR refrigerator.
	Replace refrigerator (less than 10-years-old) with an ENERGY STAR refrigerator
	Replace old clothes washer (at least 10-years-old) with an ENERGY STAR clothes washer.
	Replace clothes washer (less than 5-years-old) with an ENERGY STAR clothes washer.
	Replace dishwasher (less than 10-years-old) with new ENERGY STAR dishwasher.
	Replace TV with an ENERGY STAR model.
	Replace DVD/VCR with an ENERGY STAR model.
	Use a manual push lawn mower.

Home heating and cooling

	Don't overheat or overcool rooms. Adjust your thermostat by 2 degrees (lower in winter, higher in summer)
	Lower the temperature of your home by at least 5 degrees at nigth and when no ne is at home.
	Clean or replace air filters as recommended (i.e., cleaning a dirty air conditioner filter can save 5% of the energy used).
	Seal and insulate heating and cooling ducts.
	Add air-gap window fils to seal leaky windows in winter.
	Caulk and weatherstrip around doors and windows to plug air leaks.
	Install a programmable thermostat to automatically adjust temperatures.
	Insulate your walls and ceilings (save about 25% of home heating bills).
	If you need a new furnace, install an ENERGY STAR model.
	Add basement insulation.

Lighting

	Replace three frequently used light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs .
	Turn off unneeded lights.
	Light your Christmas tree with LED lights rather than incandescent.
	Replace outdoor incandescent Christmas lights with LED.
	Relace a halogen lamp with a compact flourescent lamp.

Water

	Take shorter showers. (Showers account for 2/3 water heating costs.)
	Wash clothes in warm or cold water, not hot. (CO2 reduction for four loads a week)
	Turn down your hot water heater thermostat; 54C [130F] degrees to kill bacteria if you have a dishwasher, otherwise 49C [120F] degrees usually hot enough.)
	Install low-flow showerheads to use less hot water.
	Install faucet aeraters.
	Switch from electrical hot water heater to gas hot water heater.
	Replace standard electric hot water heater with an on-demand hot water heater.
	Add solar hot water heating.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

	Buy minimally packaged goods (reduce your garbage by 10%).
	Reduce waste by recycling (reduce your garbage by 25%).

Vehicle

	Keep tires adequately inflated. Check them monthly.
	Change your air filter monthly.
	Don't idle your engine. Except when in traffic, turn your engine off if you must wait for more than 30 seconds.
	Reduce highway drivng speed by 5 kph below maximum posted speed.
	Switch to standard gas/ethanol blend (E10 gasoline) for your vehicle.
	Buy a hybrid car.

Transportation

	Whenever possible walk, bike, carpool or use mass transit. Pledge to save 400 litres per year.
	If you are a frequent flyer, reduce flying hours by 25 hours, by choosing alternative methods of travel

Other

	Plant a tree. Trees suck up carbon dioxide and make clean air for us to breathe.
	Plant trees next to your home (evergreens to the NW and deciduous to the SW to shade home)
